James Denley — NVQ Level 2 Chimney Sweep & Founder of Denley's
Before starting Denley's in 2019, I worked full-time as an outdoor instructor, teaching young people and running climbing, caving, and sailing sessions across the North of England. Looking for winter trade work to stay self-employed during the colder months, chimney sweeping seemed like an honest, straightforward idea.
I quickly discovered that proper sweeping is far from a simple side gig — it is a skilled craft and a technical art. Every chimney behaves differently, and understanding airflow, unlocking tricky stove components, and identifying hidden flue hazards require real hands-on trade skill.

Rather than doing a quick weekend course and heading straight into people's living rooms, I learned the trade properly through hands-on mentoring. I spent three seasons working alongside Jim from Jim Chimney across 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Between the good crack in the van travelling between jobs, Jim taught me the practical realities you can't learn from a textbook — from coaxing out stubborn, seized baffles and stripping complex stoves to managing soot with zero mess. Jim still loves to have a laugh with me whenever we catch up, but the time and patience he invested gave me the solid trade foundation I rely on every single day.
To ensure there were zero gaps in my technical knowledge, I went on to achieve my formal NVQ Level 2 in Chimney Sweeping.
The rigorous assessment process expanded my understanding of flue dynamics, building regulations, and advanced fault finding. It means every chimney I sweep and inspect is backed by both real-world trade experience and recognised industry qualifications.
Based in Carnforth, I look after homes across North Lancashire and South Cumbria — from coastal houses in Morecambe and Heysham to rural stone cottages around Kirkby Lonsdale and Ingleton.
When you burn a log on a cold evening, you aren't just burning wood — you are releasing stored sunlight back into your room. A stove or open fire is the true heart of a household. One of the best parts of my job is building long-term relationships with clients, returning year after year to keep their fires burning safely, and catching up on life along the way.
Homeowners are often nervous that chimney sweeping means soot drifting over carpets and furniture. I treat every living room with total respect:

Industrial vacuums capture microscopic soot particles instantly before they can escape into the room.
Clean magnetic sheeting seals the appliance tight during sweeping.
Generous 3m × 1.5m dust sheets and heavy-duty floor runners protect your home from the front door straight to the hearth.
Modern power sweeping removes soot and tar deposits cleanly and efficiently without damaging flue liners.
Every visit concludes with a thorough appliance safety inspection, practical advice on getting the most heat from your fuel, and an industry-standard safety certificate on completion.
